The Effect of an Educational Program Based on Health Belief Model to Reduce Cell Phone Usage While Driving Among Taxi drivers

چکیده
Background: Damage caused by traffic accidents is one of the biggest public health problems that effective control and prevention requires coordinated and comprehensive efforts. Cell phone usage while driving has became a threat to traffic safety. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of an educational program based on health belief model to reduce cell phone usage while driving among taxi drivers in Tuyserkan. Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, 110 cases of taxi drivers under 35 years old of Tuyserkan were randomly divided into two experimental and control groups. Experimental group cases of 3 taxi routes and control group cases of 3 other taxi routes using a list of them in taxi organization were selected. Data were collected using a questionnaire including health belief model constructs, knowledge, behaviors of using cell phone and demographic information. The questionnaires were self-completed. Intervention consisted of three 90-minute sessions that were applied in the experimental group and one month after the third session, held an educational reminder session for the experimental group. Both groups were followed for two months after the intervention. Finally, analysis was performed by SPSS, version 19, using Chi-square, Independent T-test, Paired T-test and McNemar. Results: The mean age of experimental and control groups was 30.42±2.63 and 30.71±2.2 years respectively. The mean scores for the constructs of health belief model (perceived susceptibility, severity, barriers, perceived benefits, self-efficacy and cues to action), knowledge, desired behaviors about the use of cell phone while driving, showed no significant differences between two groups before the intervention. After the educational intervention, in experimental group compare with control group, significant differences were observed.
