چکیده
Context: Universal immunization against Bordetella Pertussis partially has controlled disease burden and transmission. According to recent data, epidemiology of this vaccine preventable disease has been changed. Now, younger infants, adolescents and adults are at greater risk of infection. This article has studied the interaction between factors involved in changing epidemiology of pertussis and major obstacles of current strategies in prevention of pertussis. Evidence Acquisition: In this narrative review, last published sources of information on pertusiss control measures consisting of textbooks and articles have been reviewed. We focus on the more recent data about changing pertussis epidemiology in Scopus by Mesh-term words [pertussis] or [whooping cough] and [epidemiology] or [outbreak] or [resurgence], but our search not restricted with this search strategy and we try to find all available newest data in the field. Results: Primary and booster doses of pertusiss vaccine seems to partially control transmission of disease and despite different preventive strategies pertussis continue to cause mortality and morbidity in high risk groups. Conclusions: Including booster doses of acellular pertussis vaccine in addition to current national immunization practices with whole cell vaccine for young adults and pregnant women seems to control mortality and morbidity in high risk groups such as very young infants.
