چکیده
Introduction: Prostate cancer is a common disease in men over 50 years old and prostate cancer screening behaviors has an important role in reducing cases. This study was performed to determine factors associated with prostate cancer screening behaviors among men referred to Hamadan retirement centers by applying Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) as a theoretical framework. Material and Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was carried out on 403 men who referred to retirement centers through a multistage random sampling method in Hamadan (west of Iran) in 2016. The data gathering tools consisted of 2 self-administered questionnaires with questions about Protection Motivation Theory constructs and demographic characteristics. Data were analyzed with SPSS-16 software using Chi-square, independent T-test and logistic regression methods. Results: Results showed that 87 (21/6%) and 23 (5/7%) of participants had regular Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) and Digital Rectal Examination (DRE), respectively. According to the results, History of prostate problems were associated with (PSA) and (DRE) (P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis revealed that perceived costs, perceived severity and self-efficacy were significant predicting factors for PSA and perceived costs was significant predicting factor for DRE (P<0.05). Conclusion: The results showed that the prostate cancer screening behaviors among retired men in Hamadan were inappropriate status. Based on the PMT constructs, perceived severity and perceived costs of response and self-efficacy were the best predictors of PSA and DRE in men. Designing effective educational interventions based on some findings of this study would be suggested.
