چکیده
Purpose: This study was performed to determine the prevalence and characteristics of pneumatized articular tubercle (PAT) among a defined group of Iranian people by means of cone beam-computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: CBCT images of 377 patients in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Hamadan Dental School, Iran were evaluated retrospectively to detect the above lesion. Then, a review was done of 12 large case series found using a MEDLINE search of the literature. Chi-squared test was used to analyze the differences in variables such as age, gender, laterality, and locularity in our case series. Results: Out of 377 CBCT images, 59(45.7% male, 54.3% female) cases had pneumatized articular tubercle representing a prevalence of 15.6% with a mean age of 28.08±12.96 and a range of 10 to 58 years. Forty- one (69.5%) PATs were unilateral, with 10 lesions on the right and 31 on the left side. Bilateral lesions were found in 18 (30.5%) patients. Nine (15.3%) of the PATs were of the unilocular type, and 50 (84.7%) were multilocular. The results of Chi-square test showed no significant difference between two genders in terms of locularity, laterality, and left-/right involvement (p= 0.351 p= 0.166, p= 0.205). However in all PAT patients, unilateral lesions weresignificantly more common than bilateral lesions (p=0.003). In addition, multilocular lesions were more frequently seen than unilocular lesions (p= 0.000). In conclusion, Prevalence of PAT in our study was 15.6% by means of CBCT.
